Szent Jobb körmenet

Holy Right Procession

Venue: Szent István Square, St. Stephen's Basilica

The Holy Right Procession is one of Hungary’s most significant religious events, held every year on 20 August in St Stephen’s Square, Budapest. During the ceremony, the mummified right hand of King St Stephen, the first Hungarian monarch – the Holy Right relic – is carried through the streets of the city centre.

The procession traditionally sets off following a festive Mass celebrated in front of St Stephen’s Basilica; afterwards, alongside church dignitaries and the faithful, state leaders, members of chivalric orders and traditionalists also take part in the procession. The event is both an important Christian ceremony and a commemoration of the founding of the Hungarian state, which the country has been celebrating since the second half of the 19th century.
