About the celebration

20 August is Hungary's most important national holiday. It is at once a tribute to the legacy of Saint Stephen, the founder of the state, an occasion to remember Hungarian history — and an opportunity to go on writing the country's story together.

  • Four days of celebration

This year's celebration will be different in many ways from what we have grown used to in recent years. We tell the story of Hungary's history with the help of innovative visual technology, through an exciting yet accessible contemporary reinterpretation that makes our shared heritage even more vivid. Although the approach and the tools are modern, the aim is not to override tradition, but to use technology and storytelling to create the possibility of connecting with our shared past and future.

This year's message of 20 August is partnership and openness, the value held in our shared past, and the promise that, building on our traditions, we can shape Hungary's future together. Because we ourselves are the story of the country.
