Four days of celebration
This year's celebration will be different in many ways from what we have grown used to in recent years. We tell the story of Hungary's history with the help of innovative visual technology, through an exciting yet accessible contemporary reinterpretation that makes our shared heritage even more vivid. Although the approach and the tools are modern, the aim is not to override tradition, but to use technology and storytelling to create the possibility of connecting with our shared past and future.
The grand finale
At the heart of the celebration is light that also carries symbolic meaning: complementing the familiar fireworks, spectacular visual installations are being prepared, including light painting, a laser show and a large-scale drone show. The evening performance thus becomes an unconventional, dramaturgically structured total work of art, in which we look back on the pivotal events of our history from a contemporary perspective.
A colourful line-up
Alongside the spectacular evening show, this year's event series offers a varied programme for every generation at numerous venues. The line-up includes such popular heritage programmes as the Festival of Folk Arts and the air parade over the Danube, but for the first time this year the celebration is also expanded with music and leisure programmes aimed specifically at young people. Family programmes, gastronomic experiences, cultural productions and light as well as electronic music programmes are all on offer. Above all, this day is about the shared community experience, and the colourful line-up serves the goal that 20 August truly becomes a celebration for every Hungarian.
Created across generations
The 2026 state celebration is delivered by a team with more than twenty years of experience, who — working together with Hungarian creative talents, technology experts and artists — shaped this year's four-day, multi-venue programme series for 20 August. With the broad involvement of the Hungarian creative industry and events profession, this year sees the birth of a celebration that is not only of high quality but also conscious, authentic and inclusive in every respect. The entry of young people brings new perspectives and fresh thinking to the celebration, of which the important experience of the older generation remains just as organic a part.
A celebration of shared heritage
The idea guiding the shared work and connecting the generations is also the responsible and transparent use of public funds. This year's concept is deliberately built on a more rational and cost-effective organisational model, yet this does not mean that any compromise should be made regarding the standard of the Saint Stephen's Day celebration. Well-prepared, cooperation-based organisation, together with up-to-date technology, guarantees that 20 August this year too is an event series worthy of Hungary's most important national holiday. It is important, however, that spectacle and technology are merely tools for telling the story of our shared cultural heritage: all of this is filled with real meaning by the crowd celebrating together and becoming an organic part of the event.
