This year, Hungary’s Sugar-Free Cake was once again selected in the competition organized by the One Drop Attention Foundation, which works to prevent diabetes. The winner of the competition held to mark August 20 in 2026 is Szilvafácska, created by Promenád Café in Balatongyörök.
The competition was organized for the 15th time by the organization founded by Antónia Erős, which also created the sugar-free cake competition. The aim of the program is to draw confectioners’ attention to the growing demand for cakes and pastries that contain no added sugar and can be incorporated into a balanced diet, while also offering a festive alternative for those who consciously monitor their sugar intake.
Summer Memories Captured in a Cake
The winning confectioners, Alena Puchovszki, Jenő Vadócz and Gábor Pethő, took the deep flavor of slowly cooked plum jam as their starting point. It is paired with the delicate spiciness of cinnamon, which appears in the form of a modern and light mousse. Layer by layer, the cake unfolds with toasted walnuts adding a crunchy texture, while milk chocolate and a touch of refreshing green tea enhance the complexity of the flavors. Szilvafácska is thus a dessert where nostalgia and memories of home meet a modern approach to pastry-making and technology.
“Our goal was to create a cake without added sugar that is not about what is missing, but about the experience. A dessert that offers a complete taste experience without compromise,” explain the cake’s creators. “The end of summer is always about plums for us. When they finally become truly sweet, it is time to start preserving them. Grandma makes jam. The aroma of slowly simmering plums fills the room, seasoned with cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg. Just as it has always been made. We wanted to capture this experience in a cake.”
And, of course, most importantly, this cake contains no added sugar at all. One slice contains just 15.3 grams of carbohydrates and 253.7 kcal, making it an excellent choice for people with diabetes and for those who want to pay closer attention to their sugar intake. The cake also contains no refined flour: the almond flour, nuts and sources of fiber used in the recipe contribute to a more favorable nutritional profile, making the cake easy to incorporate into the diet of people with diabetes, either as part of a small meal or as a dessert.
The second-place winner of the competition is the cake named “Nyári Szenvedély” (“Summer Passion”), created by Ádám Novák and László Csonka, confectioners at Reök Artisan Confectionery and Café in Szeged. Third place went to “Ribizlikeringő” (“Currant Waltz”), created by János Kovács and Sándor Benczur on behalf of Kovács Confectionery in Kiskunfélegyháza. This year, a children’s jury made up of children with diabetes also selected a favorite. Its winner was also the creation named “Ribizlikeringő.” The cake received the special award of the Hungary’s Sugar-Free Cake – UNO Children’s Jury.
Bíborfehér named Hungary’s Cake of the Year!
Alongside the sugar-free cake, a winner was also selected in the Magyarország Tortája (Cake of Hungary) competition: Bíborfehér, a traditional yet innovative dessert featuring a light sour-cream mousse and berries. In 2026, the country’s cake was once again created by Kézműves Confectionery in Gyula, which won the title last year with its cake named DCJ Stílusgyakorlat.
The winning cakes can be tasted from August 20 at Magyar Ízek Utcája at Várkert Bazár and at nearly 500 confectioneries across the country. From August 18, confectioneries selling the winning cakes can also be found on the renewed www.cukraszat.net website, where a map allows visitors to immediately find the confectionery closest to them. In addition, the list of confectioneries selling the sugar-free cake is also available on the www.egycseppfigyelem.hu website.
